Women in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in the Territory of Uvira, endure daily hardships. To provide for their families, they carry heavy loads on their backs and heads, often walking more than 20 kilometres to find food and pay for their children’s school fees. Unfortunately, this strenuous labour takes a toll on their health, leading to chronic low back pain, headaches, gynaecological issues, and even miscarriages.
These courageous women lack support and assistance, and their struggles often go unrecognised in both local and international media.

To alleviate their suffering and promote socio-economic development, Dr Luc Mulimbalimba Masururu and his organisation, MHCD (Mission in Health Care and Development), have initiated the Bicycles for Health and Development project. This initiative aims to equip these women with bicycles, allowing them to transport goods without the physical strain of carrying heavy loads on their backs and heads.
Those fortunate enough to receive bicycles from Australia have expressed immense gratitude for this transformative gift. With these bicycles, they can now travel to markets and fields with pride, free from the burdens they once carried. The bikes also facilitate household chores, such as fetching water, significantly reducing their physical strain.
However, the number of bicycles available is limited. To further support these women, MHCD has launched additional income-generating projects, helping them achieve financial independence. Women have been integrated into development clubs where they are provided with resources to pursue various activities, including agriculture, livestock farming, soap making, and small businesses.
These initiatives empower women to take charge of their lives, enabling them to earn money while avoiding the heavy burdens of the past. The Bicycles for Health and Development project, along with micro-credit programs, has significantly contributed to the socio-economic, health, educational, and cultural development of many communities in the Uvira Territory.
